Land Rover Transmission Mainshaft Nut Tool
Series I, II, IIA and III
Drawings, Specs, and Ordering Information.
Technical Drawings by Kelly Minnick minnick@ridgecrest.ca.us.
Transmission mainshaft nut tool with 1/2" drive socket,
or with external hex-head.
Production Notes by Karen Sindir
I have tried the O/D Tool prototype out on a mainshaft with a nut at BP and it
worked fine. The tool has been modified from the original design by Kelly
Minnick to account for tolerance differences in the the tapered parts of the
mainshaft nuts and now has a slip fit onto the mainshaft to assist in engaging
the nut.
Material of construction: 416 Stainless Steel, Rockwell hardness of about
25-30, machine finish, no chrome plating. This material in it's highly tempered
(hardness up to 60) form is used for cutlery. It has better corrosion resistance
than standard 10-18 steels, but not as good as the 300 series stainless steels.
It has better toughness than mild steels and should have good durabilty in this
application.
Overall configuration: Cylindrical socket approximately 3-3/16" long (to
ends of teeth) X 1-3/4" O.D. I.D. of about 11/16" to a depth of about 1/4" and
below that an I.D of 3/4" plus about 3 thousandths (for slip fit over mainshaft).
One end has 4 equally spaced square teeth to engage the slots on the nut and
the other end is a hex head about 19/32" long which can be engaged with either
a standard 7/8" or 22mm 1/2 drive socket.
The machinist is asking $45 each plus shipping costs (FED EX, UPS whatever you
want). He will produce 15 - 20 tools before the end of this month [January 1998].
